ABOVE THE PLAIN

This prototype for post-Katrina housing in New Orleans targets vacant land above the flood plain as a potential site for rebuilding resilient mixed-use communities. The building knits together existing urban fragments, undulating to maximize perimeter light and ventilation, while maintaining a high density of housing units. An unconditioned, single-loaded circulation spine serves as a massive shading device for passive ventilation while also functioning as a social space for residents.
